to pass on a word of greeting, as in “Greet your mother” (PTebt. 412). Sometimes a third party sent greetings, such as in “Apollos greets you” (PMich. 8.514). Usually the list of greetings is relatively short, a line or two. However, long lists of greetings are not unknown.4 Paul included words of greeting in most of his letters. He used generic greetings, such as “Greet every saint in Christ Jesus” (Phil 4:21) or “Greet all the brothers and sisters with a holy kiss” (1 Thess 5:26), as well as named
